Small Animal Care

Reliable small animal care available across the Staffordshire and South Derbyshire region.

From the tiniest furries to the most particular reptiles, our team has cared for just about everything that eats, sleeps, or sheds at home - small furries and rabbits, birds, reptiles and exotics, fish, and plenty in between.

If you've got something a little more unusual, just ask. Chances are someone on the team has looked after one before.

Rely on us

The animal lovers at Sue’s Pet Care understand that all pets are precious – big and small. That is why we have put together our small animal care service catering for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, ferrets, birds and fish. Reptiles and exotic pets will be considered but will require a more detailed care plan. This will come at no extra cost.

Work commitments, hospital stays, or short breaks away, there will always be those times when we cannot be at home for our pets, and it can be even harder to find care for those who live in tanks or cages. Rely on us to take away the pressure and stress of caring for your beloved pets in your absence.

Individual, Consistent Care

All our services are bespoke to you and your pet. Before taking on the job, we will meet with you to discuss exactly what your pet’s needs are and learn about their routine and personality. A key worker will then be assigned to you so you can be assured of reliable and consistent care for as long as you require our services.

Small Animal visits

Includes up to two small animals from the same household, feeding, fresh water, habitat checks, enrichment time, and daily photo updates.

What we Provide

Small animal services include feeding, providing fresh water and cleaning out cages or tanks, as required. Specialist care, such as medication or dietary needs, can also be provided. This service can be a stand-alone package, or can be combined with another of our available pet services. We can also arrange to take care of any other small duties: watering plants, bringing in post or sorting out bins for collection.

Peace of Mind

All our members of staff are fully qualified in Pet First Aid, are DBS checked and are fully insured. They each have their special area of experience and expertise. For added peace of mind, our vehicles are unbranded, so nobody will be able to track when you aren’t at home.

Book your free call

Give us a call and we'll chat through what you need and answer any questions. From there we'll arrange a free meet and greet - a chance to meet you and your pet and make note of everything that matters to them

Book when you're ready

Once we've met you and your pet, book and manage everything through our PetSitter Plus app. We'll send photo updates after every visit so you always know your pet is happy and in safe hands.

Can you look after reptiles and exotics?

Yes, our team has experience with bearded dragons, geckos, tortoises, snakes, and other exotics. We'll always do a meet-and-greet beforehand to talk through feeding, handling preferences, and any specific care your pet needs. If you've got something unusual, just ask - we're happy to learn.

Do you look after birds?

Yes, from budgies and cockatiels to parrots and finches. We can handle daily feeding, water, cage maintenance, and out-of-cage time if that's part of their routine.

What about fish or aquariums?

We do freshwater and tropical tank care - feeding, water checks, and basic maintenance to your instructions. For more complex setups (marine tanks, sensitive systems), just ask and we'll talk it through.

Can you administer medication?

Yes — most members of our team are confident with oral, topical, and some injectable medications. We'll always agree the routine with you beforehand and follow your vet's instructions exactly.

Do you have experience with my pet's specific needs?

Probably! Between the team we've cared for just about everything over the years. If you've got something we haven't met before, we'll have an honest conversation about whether we're the right fit - and if we're not, we'll do our best to point you toward someone who is.

What if my pet has a complex routine or special diet?

That's completely fine. We work to your instructions, however detailed — fresh food prep, supplements, multiple feeding times, fussy eaters. Everything gets agreed in the meet-and-greet and written into our care notes.

Do you look after multiple pets in the same home?

Yes, that's pretty standard for us. Our pricing reflects up to two pets per visit, with a small additional charge per extra pet. We'll talk through the whole household at the meet-and-greet.

What if my pet has never been left with someone before?

That's quite normal, especially for rabbits, reptiles, and birds whose owners haven't travelled before. Our meet-and-greet is designed to get your pet comfortable with us in their own environment - and we can build in a few short trial visits if it helps.

Do you offer home boarding for small animals?

We don't board pets in our own homes - all our visits happen at your place, where your pets are most comfortable. For smaller animals especially, staying in their own environment with their familiar smells, sounds, and routine is usually far less stressful than being moved somewhere new.

Which areas do you cover for small animal care

We cover Tamworth, Swadlincote, Burton-on-Trent, Lichfield, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Sutton Coldfield, plus all the villages in between. If you're not sure whether we reach you, just ask - if you're on the edge of our patch we'll always do our best to find a way.

Do you charge for key collection?

Your first key collection is free. We can hold onto your key, return it to a safe place you specify, or add it to your keysafe (if you have one) for easy access. If we need to collect a key again in the future, there's a small £6 charge.

Drop us a message if you have any questions we've not covered
